Konstanz to Worms

Not much to write but pictures abound!

Got smart. Emailed Altes Ruderhaus for late checkin and got a response quickly with directions on how to claim the key and get into our room. After a horrible night’s sleep in Gasthaus Centro, we check out, pay our tab and head for the parking garage to hit the road.  OMG! From 10pm to 10am, the cost was 20 euro to park!!!

Off to Worms with stops on the way since this will be a long four hour drive.  First stop, Triberg waterfall which is advertised as the highest waterfall in Germany at 500’.  Definitely impressive and fun to photograph.

Went next to the Gutach Open Air Museum where 13 generations of one family lived and worked. The land that was held by and handed down thirteen generations to their children to keep working the farm as it had been the generation before. I can't imagine such a devotion on the part of each of the subsequent generations. It is now governed by the local county. After wandering some of the 12 acres of land, we had dinner at their restaurant where we shared a single plate of ravioli, potato salad, greens salad, wine spritzers and of course, Black Forest Cake!  Where else do you expect to have this cake but IN the Black Forest!

Kitchen and stove on one side of the wall and ....
The green ceramic piece is actually the back of the fireplace/oven in the next room! An ingenious way to heat two rooms without the extra cost of firewood.
Stream runs the waterwheel for the mill and also can be dammed in drought times.

REMEMBER...you usually remember the highs and lows of every event whether it be a birthday party, a wedding or just a gathering of friends. So on this trip, we have memorable events to laugh and reminisce in the future.  Here's one...

We had paid for the parking and saved 2 euros by doing so but upon departing our ticket wouldn’t open the gate! See? We have adventures at every turn! We backed up (after the car behind let us) and parked. It’s too far to walk to the ticket counter so I asked a local shopkeeper for a suggestion to get out. She started to explain and then turned to her younger employee (a boy in his teens) and he explained the INFO button. Seems there’s an “INFO” button to call for assistance. Returned to the car, pulled up to the exit gate and pushed the INFO button. The woman at the other end didn’t understand English very well and said we were breaking up. When she wanted me to back out and go to a pay station, I explained we were already at the gate and it wouldn’t open. Eine moment! While we waited, the nice lady from the gift shop came over to the car to make sure we found the INFO button and see if she could help.  How nice! And a few minutes later (with 3 cars patiently waiting in line behind me) the gate opened!

And the adventure continues. It wasn’t until after 8pm when we reached our next stop in Worms, Altes Ruderhaus hotel. Due to dumb luck, we found this one with little effort even though we weren’t sure where we were going.  We almost broke our arms patting ourselves on the back. Whoop! There it is! And this place is luxury.

WHAT A NICE SURPRISE! The check in was per email directions to get the key and the room had so many pluses: There is a bottle of sparkling water with an opener and two glasses. There is a makeup remover kit with Q tips and an emory board in the bathroom with little bottles of soap and creams.  Haribo candies on our bed; pillows and towels folded as if on a luxury cruise ship. It was heaven! The room is large (unlike the past couple stays) with a desk and a wardrobe. The bed was divine and I don’t think I moved from one spot all night. Will hate to leave in the morning.

Although not located in the best area due to shipping yard next door, the hotel made up for it by being RIGHT ON THE RHINE RIVER and having a gorgeous interior.

First up…GET HARD LIQUOR…after that drive!  I tried to order at the bar.  Nope, need a waitress. Got my Jack and Coke and tried to pay…NOPE…need a waitress. Waited, waited, waited. Finally I go back to the bar and he can’t take my money either so he gets my waitress. We pay and return to the room.

Can’t blog…too stressed and need sleep.

Off to bed and up for Klotten and the Mosel wine country tomorrow!
