Intervac Vacation & Planning ahead

Preparation

As I get ready for my 8th Intervac.com exchange since joining, I am reminded how inexpensively travel can be if you just "take the plunge".  This will be my first visit to Germany and I will be touring the southern end of this beautiful country bordering Austria, Switzerland and France. I'll do my best to recount the day but pictures will be my focus of this blog. I'll take each of you with me in my heart!

Kreuztal will be our home base once we complete our 9-day road trip and a VW Golf will be our mode of transportation with this exchange. Day trips venturing out from Kreuztal with a 1-2 hour radius will take up most of our remaining days in this beautiful country.

We start with a Road Trip upon arrival since we want to arrive in time for an annual re-enactment from a 1631 event which saved the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany's best preserved medieval walled town) with the mayor drinking 3 1/4 liters of Franconian wine in one gulp.  The military parade takes place on Whit Sunday (Pentecost) and is the highlight of the festival.  For more info, check out this site:

The adventure begins May 15th arriving the 16th in Frankfurt with a nonstop from Tampa via United operated by Lufthansa.  We will drive the Romantische Strasse down to Rothenburg with a side trip to Nuremberg on the way.

Pictures are worth a thousand words for this walk in the woods. Add caption Birds but unidentified.  Sorry. Woodpecker nest. Babies chirping gave it away. horse trail? Not sure. Getting my "nest" shot! Mama with food. Thought I was mama returning! Trying to get to her nest but I think our presence deters her. The paths were wide and inviting! Cords of wood can be found at various points along the way. Wonder who or what uses all this wood. We had a great couple hours exploring!

Burg Eltz to Kreuztal

Burg Eltz was so named in 1147 by the river that meanders around 3 sides of this castle. It has been in the same family for 850 years and, at one point, was inhabited by three brothers Eltz and their families. It has never been destroyed or conquered even while being on an important trade route.    Being built on a rock, it could not be expanded in width and breadth so the upward build was necessary. As the brothers died or decided to move away, the remaining brother purchased their share of the castle. Today, the family remains the owners and the restoration process cost is handled by the Count and Countess Eltz with some assistance from the German Government and private donors. The Countess, for over 40 years, lived in the castle and weekly decorated each room with a large bouquet of flowers from her garden.    Now, at 97, she leaves this task to a local florist. Landing in Frankfurt

Another mostly sleepless night. I enjoyed being able to stretch out in the exit row of the 320/300 Airbus but catching just a few winks will definitely make this time transition difficult. We arrived 40 minutes late due to the late departure and then Frankfurt wasn’t ready for us and a couple other flights so no gangplanks were available. Stuck on the plan for another 30 minutes was difficult with passengers already in the aisles and cued to deplane. Chatting with a nice couple from Tampa who were trying to make a connection for a 12:15 departure to Budapest, I learned of their river cruise plans. Luckily they had planned for 4 days in Budapest before boarding their boat. This was going to be their first river cruise but they were liner cruises already and had 6 other friends from those cruises traveling the same route with them.
